  38. I am one those people working on S3, 8514/a, and ATI Ultra under 386bsd.
  39. XBSD8514 works with 8514/a and ATI Ultra in 8514/a mode. So far
  40. under 386bsd there has been no problems reported with the 8514/a server,
  41. except for a minor bug of the mouse buttons being switched.
  42. However my support is limited for the 8514/a because I don't own
  43. an 8514/a card nor an ATI Ultra card.

  45. XS3 is a server based on the 8514/a server but modified to work with 
  46. S3's chipset 911/924. XS3 supports the hardware cursor available on
  47. the S3 chipsets. The server works on all S3 cards which use a 
  48. non- programmable clock synthetizers. Known major brand cards known
  49. to work with XS3 are: Orchid Farenheit 1280, Actix GraphicEngine and
  50. STB Wind/X. Known window managers to work with XS3 are Motif, 
  51. olwm, gwm, and twm. Additionally, all XFree86 clients work with
  52. XS3.

  54. The reason that I started from the stock X11R5 is that most of the
  55. XFree86 work is related to supporting non-accelarated graphic cards
  56. such as the et4000. Since I use hardware implemented blitbt, 
  57. line, rectangle and fill functionality, the vga speed-ups were
  58. not needed. Currently we are about 6 times faster than XFree86.

  60. Currently, I am working on supporting S3's 801 chipset which has
  61. an overall performance improvement of %50. When I am done we
  62. should have a 60k+ xstones server.

  64. XS3 and the 8514/a servers are also available for Linux.

  66. Binaries and patches for all mentioned servers are available
  67. at sunvis.rtpnc.epa.gov:/pub/386bsd/incoming.
  68. I found that porting the 8514/a was very simple to port to 386bsd.
