-
- I really like the new release of the American Power Conversion (APC)
- "PowerChute" software, coupled with its *Smart*-UPS systems. Using this
- combination, the serial port used to communicate between UPS and
- computer does not have to have modem control.
-
- The new version of the software allows the user, from any UNIX terminal,
- to query the UPS' electrical load, battery capacity, its operating
- temperature and other such stuff. It allows the root user to test the
- UPS or simulate a power outage. It can fully adjust how you want to
- configure what action is taken on line power failure or low-battery.
-
- The version specifically supports SCO UNIX, however, I have tested it
- and it works exactly as advertised on System V Release 4 (ESIX) as well.
-
- APC is a very popular brand of UPS and many distributors should have it.
- Remember to get the "SmartUPS". They also make a cheaper "BackUPS", but it
- works with PowerChute in a far more limited manner.
