- I don't know anyone running DOS under UNIX, I've never seen it done, and can't
- think how I could get exposed to it. I know you folks are all doing it and
- want to get on with the business of talking about doing it, so I'll try to
- keep it short.
-
- I'm thinking about reconfiguring my computing set-up, and one option I've
- considered is Dell or MST SysV on one machine, and not having a DOS machine
- at all. But, I'm stuck needing some DOS applications, and I need performance
- to be at least as good as on my 16mHz 386sx w/ 1meg RAM and a s-l-o-w disk.
-
- The DOS applications will be WordPerfect, MicroSoft Flight Simulator, maybe
- a few other games and maybe MS-DOS Kermit.
-
- The machine will be, say, a 386/33 with 8meg RAM and a modern, fast HD or two.
- I believe Dell UNIX comes with Merge, but I wouldn't mind hearing about the
- other DOS-under-UNIX options.
-
- Will I get good performance out of, say, Flight Simulator if 3 people are
- logged in to UNIX at 2400 baud reading news or doing other, simular tasks?
- (That is, no compiling or running database programs or other such heavy
- duty things.)
-
- I guess I should also ask how badly running DOS applications can slow UNIX
- down.
-
- Also, using the popular DOS emulators, do you get a DOS-like shell and file
- system? What about printing from WordPerfect or at the DOS prompt using
- type filename > prn, or copying from the HD to a floppy, can things like
- this be set up to work normally?
-
- I guess what I'm asking is this: My girlfriend is experienced only with DOS.
- Once I teach her to log in, will she be comfy, just like she is now sitting in
- front of our MS-DOS PC?
-
- A pointer to a book or magazine article dealing with these concerns would
- be great.
-
- E-mail would be fine, and I'll share the answers with others via e-mail or
- summarize to the net if there's enough interest.
-
- Thanks awfully,
- Patrick
