- I thought this would be an FAQ but couldn't find it in either FAQ or
- FAQ-supp.
-
- Why does TeX takes so long (5-7 secs) to start on a SparcStation?
- (We have TeX 3.14t3 and SunOS 4.1.2.) I use latex (amslatex) most of the
- time and use include files to break long documents. Therefore, I need only
- to run latex a couple of pages at once. I would like to see the result
- through xdvi instantaneously. Although auctex allows me to run tex
- asynchronously and go ahead to do the editing, it is still annoying to wait
- that long.
-
- Here are the questions:
-
- 1) Is there a better way to compile it? We have Sun bundled cc and
- unbundled acc, and can get gcc if necessary. Is TeX compilable with pc and
- is that going to be any faster? (Was TeX written in a dialect of Pascal?)
-
- 2) Is there a better way to use it? Can I keep TeX running all the
- time and send new files to it on demand? (Like the way ispell works in
- emacs. Ispell takes 5 secs to start. Emacs starts ispell the first time you
- use it and keep it running until you kill emacs.)
-
- Thanks in advance.
