Donald Knuth writes in "The TeXBook" on page 116: "If you have two
or more topinsert, pageinsert, or midinsert commands in quick
succession, they ... will retain their relative order when they are
carried over [to subsequent pages]."

However, when I placed four midinserts at once for figures 6,7,8,
and 9 in my text, they appear in the order 6,9,7,8. The vbox created
for figure 9 was shorter than for figures 7 and 8, so it seems to
have floated ahead of them. (Figures 6 and 9 appear on the same
page, followed by the figure 7 midinsert on the next page, and the
figure 8 midinsert on the page after that.) But doesn't this
contradict Knuth's statement? How do I ensure their order?

I'm using TeXtures with Karl Berry's EPlain format. TIA to anyone
who can help.
