- 1. As someone posted, "virtex &format", where "format" is any format,
- works. I'd use a shell script to call it.

- 2. We use Karl Berry's "web2c" C version of TeX. In this, if the TeX
- program is named "fred", it loads "fred.fmt". Thus we have links to
- TeX with the names "tex" (and "tex.fmt" is linked to "plain.fmt"),
- "latex" and "amslatex". So, there's no special executable for each
- format, just a special name, by linking.
