  14. 1.  As someone posted, "virtex &format", where "format" is any format,
  15. works.  I'd use a shell script to call it.

  17. 2.  We use Karl Berry's "web2c" C version of TeX.  In this, if the TeX
  18. program is named "fred", it loads "fred.fmt".  Thus we have links to
  19. TeX with the names "tex" (and "tex.fmt" is linked to "plain.fmt"),
  20. "latex" and "amslatex".  So, there's no special executable for each
  21. format, just a special name, by linking.
