- The 4th Meiko User Society Conference
- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- 15th and 16th April 1993 at the Southampton Moat House Hotel
-
- ----------
- Objectives
- ----------
-
- The Meiko User Society annual conference provides a forum for users and
- administrators of Meiko systems to meet and discuss relevant issues.
- Meiko directors, support and technical staff are also present, providing
- an opportunity for direct discussion.
-
- The conference will include sessions for User papers, Special Interest
- Groups (SIGs), and informative workshops. This year there are two
- workshops which will be held concurrently; one concerning High
- Performance Fortran and the other continuing the theme set at last
- year's conference of advanced CSTools programming issues and problems.
- The final afternoon of the conference is devoted to SIGs. The SIGs will
- provide a friendly forum for the discussion of: Parallel Database
- Systems, Parallel Graphics and Data Visualisation, Computational Fluid
- Dynamics, Grand Challenge problems and High Performance Fortran.
-
- -----
- Venue
- -----
-
- The 1993 Meiko User Conference will be held at the Southampton Moat
- House Hotel. This hotel is about half a mile from the University of
- Southampton's main campus at Highfield and approximately two miles from
- Southampton city centre.
-
- The University of Southampton has had a very strong association with
- parallel computing since the early days of the first generation of
- transputers. Today the University is playing a major role in the
- development of new standards and technology in the parallel computing
- world. Currently there are three main parallel computing groups at
- Southampton and their work covers academic research, industrial and
- commercial applications, and user service and support.
-
- The conference will be mainly held at the Moat House Hotel. Those
- delegates wishing to attend the CSTools workshop will be transported to
- and from the University.
-
- ----
- Date
- ----
-
- The conference will be held on Thursday 15th and Friday 16th April 1993.
-
- ----------
- Membership
- ----------
-
- Membership of the Meiko User Society (MeikUS) is free to all users of
- Meiko equipment. Members are entitled to free copies of the Society's
- journal "Surface Noise" (published four times a year). In addition
- members have access to an archive server and will receive regular
- information on conferences and events connected with the Society.
-
- ---------------
- Call For Papers
- ---------------
-
- Submission of abstracts: January 15th 1993
- Notification of acceptance: February 1st 1993
- Final versions of papers: March 15th 1993
-
- Authors should submit full papers in English of not more than 20 A4,
- double spaced, pages, together with an abstract. Three copies should be
- submitted together with an electronic version in plain ASCII text. It
- should be noted that accepted papers will be published in "Surface
- Noise" and in the North Holland journal "Future Generation Computer
- Systems".
-
- An added attraction at this years conference will be a user poster
- display competition. Each entrant should produce a poster of no more
- than A1 size with pictures and text describing their work. Delegates
- interested in entering this competition should indicate so on the
- application form.
-
- Meiko are kindly sponsoring the prizes for the best paper presentation
- and the best submitted poster.
-
- ----------------
- CSTools Tutorial
- ----------------
-
- This workshop will concentrate on the use of advanced CSN communications
- features such as message prioritisation and the effects of various CSN
- function call parameters on the behaviour of CSN primitives.
-
- The workshop will be of particular interest to CSTools users in the
- client-server applications field but is also designed to of general interest.
- No particular knowledge of client-server applications will be assumed.
-
- The workshop will, however, assume a background knowledge and understanding
- of various modes of communication available within CSTools along with a
- working knowledge of Unix and one of its common editors (vi or emacs).
-
- The workshop will be of an "exploratory" nature involving both group and
- individual work and will last approximately 1.5 - 2.0 hours.
-
- ---------------------------------
- High Performance Fortran Workshop
- ---------------------------------
-
- Since its introduction over 3 decades ago, Fortran has been the language
- of choice for scientific and engineering programming for sequential
- computers. Exploiting the full capability of modern parallel
- architectures, however, increasingly requires more information than
- ordinary Fortran77 or Fortran90 programs provide.
-
- The High Performance Fortran Forum was formed in January 1992 as a
- coalition of industrial and academic groups working to develop a set of
- standard Fortran extensions to provide the necessary information,
- particularly for data parallel computation. The working group includes
- most vendors and manufacturers of parallel computers, compiler vendors, and
- many leading academic research groups in the field of parallel computation.
-
- The resulting informal language standard, High Performance Fortran
- (HPF), is due to be published at the start of 1993. It will be based on
- extensions to Fortran90 as the base language, and is intended to be
- portable from workstations to massively parallel supercomputers while
- being able to express the algorithms needed to achieve high performance
- on specific architectures. The extensions will consist of:
-
- new directives, e.g. for data distribution on multiprocessors;
-
- new language features, probably limited to a FORALL statement and
- construct, and new intrinsic procedures;
-
- language restrictions, e.g. in the use of sequence and storage
- association.
-
- An official subset of full HPF will be defined for faster implementation.
-
- This HPF workshop will include the following topics:
-
- a tutorial introduction to HPF;
-
- a review of current and planned HPF implementations and related tools
- for parallel program development.
-
- -------------
- Social Events
- -------------
-
- A reception before the conference banquet has been sponsored by Meiko.
- The conference banquet will be held on Thursday evening.
-
- -----------------
- Conference Format
- -----------------
-
- The morning of the first day is being set aside for:
-
- A CSTools workshop given by Meiko staff.
- A High Performance Fortran workshop given by staff from the
- University of Southampton.
-
- User presentations and keynote speeches will take place during the first
- afternoon and the second morning. The final afternoon will consist of a
- number of SIGs running in parallel.
