  13. Setup: Sun 3/60, SunOS 4.1.1, current disc is 300Mb Maxtor XT-8380E as sd2

  15. Objective: Temporairly add a Sun shoebox, one of the Seagate ST1480 family.

  17. I'm not sure what the new disc is configured as, I'm assuming it's sd0, but
  18. I'd rather not have to go opening the case and poking around to find out.
  19. Also, the new disk is formatted, but has nothing on it, my current disc has
  20. the OS on it, the idea is to connect the new disc and copy the OS across.

  22. At the back, there's two 50pin SCSI connectors, I've plugged the sun into the
  23. bottom one, and the current sd2 disk into the top one, then booted the
  24. machine, here's when the fun begins, I get these error messages:

  26. scsi: getbyte failed
  27. scsi: getbyte failed
  28. invalid status msg = FFFFFFFF
  29.  
  30. this is repeated again, and then nothing else, no response from either disc,
  31. if I swap the connections to the new scsi disc around and boot, there's
  32. NOTHING, no error messages, zilch, the Maxtor also has a scsi tape in it's
  33. casing, in both cases, this grinds/chugs for a bit, but that's about all that
  34. happens, and isn't out of the ordinary.

  36. On the back of the shoebox, is also a little window thing, with the number 1
  37. in it, and two miniscule buttons above and below, with - and + on them
  38. respectively, what is this for?  Is it perhaps an indicator of what sd? this
  39. disk is configured for, meaning that it's currently sd1?

  41. I've looked through admin manual pages, but can't find any reference to the
  42. error messages, so I'll look through paper manuals tonight, in the meantime
  43. though, can anyone tell me what might be wrong?  This is very important, and
  44. any help would be useful.
