- Hi!

- Re:
- | Is it possible to use your program to create a bootable 4.1.2 tape?
- | I have only a tape drive here and if I could use that to recover from
- | an 'accident' rather than go out and rent the CD unit again... It would
- | be great. How about recovering from back-up tape of the system rather than
- | booting off a 'boot-tape?'
-
- Not to create a boot-tape from scratch, per se.
-
- The "trick" that tprobe uses is to write logical blocks and "file marks" at
- exactly the same points as they appear on original SunOS boot tapes. Thus,
- in a sense, it's writing variable-length "logical" records.
-
- If one knew precisely what files (and their order) that are supposed to appear
- on a boot tape, then one could write a trivial (yes, no fooling) C program and
- script to create a new boot tape from scratch (from files on one's disk(s)).
-
- The real trick would be knowing the format of the special "table of contents"
- save-set(s) that appear on a SunOS boot tape. I just have never analyzed any
- of the boot tapes here, but it shouldn't be too difficult to glean assuming
- one had the time (or the incentive! :-) Most the save-sets on a SunOS boot
- tape are simply compressed tar files (I learned that early in the game).
-
- Sorry I don't have more specific information at this time, but I do intend
- to figure it out "Real Soon Now", since I have SunOS 4.1.3 and Solaris 2.*
- ONLY on CD-ROM and I'd like to have tape counterparts to be able to at least
- boot into a mini-root. I just don't like the total dependence on a single
- media type.
