- Same over here: In the past year or so, six RS6000 were bought and installed.
- We ( the sys-admins ) have not been able to get these beasts running stable.
- Now it's considered to purchase a Sparc 10 as a server machine for the RS6000
- pool to have a reliable server.
- Compared to the RS6000s it was very easy to port all our local software to
- Solaris 2.0, including X11 (server and clients), GNU software and local
- stuff, even without BSD compatibility libraries.
-
- We were quite skeptic about porting to solaris 2 because none of us had
- experience with SysV before: It has been a pleasant surprise.
- Of course, there are some things left to improve and correct in solaris 2.
- I expect sun to put a lot of work into that in order to convince their
- customers to make the transition from BSDish SunOS 4.x to solaris 2.
-
- To summarize : I'm not too happy to have to change to the SysV world but
- solaris 2 is not that bad after all. And our experience with IBM, DEC, HP
- gives rise to the question "What is the alternative ?"
- I admit that the other machines aren't too bad, but all in all Suns still
- look good to me.
