- I don't agree with you on several points.
-
- 1. It looks to me like you are comparing BSD derivatives with System V, but not
- SVr4. I haven't seen much of SunOS 4 functionality disappear in Solaris 2.0.
- 2. Porting from SunOS4 to Solaris 2.x, in my opinion, is NOT much of a problem.
- If you know a bit about UNIX and C portability then your code won't contain
- many problems.
- Obviously, there are lots of ways to get you in trouble. If you application is
- still running the 5+ year old SunView software, or something similar, which
- Sun has been telling you to get rid of for several years by now...
- 3. The networking utilities in Solaris 2.0, don't seem less powerful/useful than
- their SunOS 4 equivalents.
- 4. I don't know why you are expecting hundreds of changes to shell scripts. If you
- change the PATH then you should still be ok. /usr/ucb on Solaris 2.0 contains all
- of the good old commands. All shells are still there as well.
- Sure, /usr/etc has been renamed to /usr/sbin. Who cares ?
- 5. "... are more interested in the Berkeley environment" - Maybe you should have
- looked at the marketing hype for once. SVr4 is a unified environment in which
- Sun and ATT have attempted to support a wide range of SVr3, Xenix, and SunOS
- functionality.
-
- Please don't misunderstand me here - I am also a BSD lover. I just don't feel that
- Solaris 2.0 takes me far away from that. BTW I have been running Solaris 2.0 on my
- workstation for several months now.
