- I'm posting this in case anyone else had the same missunderstanding
- that I did about how to back up a Novell 3.11 file server using a
- non-novell-aware backup program. I was under the incorrect assumption
- that if I used bindfix/bindrestore to backup the binderies, and our
- regular tape software to backup the volume, that we could recover
- everything using a combination of the two.
-
- Well, after lightning struck one of our customer sites, blowing the
- power supply fan and *BOTH* duplexed SCSI disks (this on a file server
- with a surge protector and UPS), we loaned the
- customer a drive to use while the SCSI drives were repaired. We then
- proceded to restore the binderies and all the information. When we
- were done, the trustee rights, and a few other minor things were
- missing.
-
- Upon further examination, we learned that the trustee rights are not
- located in the binderies. We talked to Microware Tech support about
- the problem, and they faxed us a Novell document describing the proper
- procedure in detail, which is to use NBACKUP to backup the binderies,
- trustee rights, and directory structure, then use the regular backup
- procedures to backup the data itself.
-
- The story does have a happy end, though, as this was our most
- documented system, and the only one where we had a hard-copy of all
- the trustee rights. It took an hour to reenter all the trustee rights
- by hand, but we managed to learn a valuable lesson without loosing
- important data.
-
- I sincerely hope that this misconception is a rare one, but my
- impression is that it is not, so I also hope that anyone on the net
- using a normal backup program read this, so they dont fall into this
- trap as well.
-
- If you don't use a Novell-aware backup program, and are not using
- NBACKUP to save your binderies and trustee rights, I strongly
- recommend you look into this problem.
