- Nothing all-inclusive or laboratory scientific here, but I thought
- some of you would be interested in the results of some of our file
- server testing. We've been looking into NetWare for Macintosh as
- an alternative to separate Mac and PC file servers.
-
- So, I hooked up a string of Mac Plusses (on AppleTalk) and plugged
- them alternately into an SE/30 AppleShare file server and a 386 33MHz
- running NetWare for Mac.
-
- The bad news: I was limited by a 5 user license on the NetWare
- end. The good news: I used exactly the same machines, cabling,
- and anything else I could think of (no other network traffic at
- the time).
-
- Here's how it came out:
-
- Launch MS Word (2 machines) (4 machines) (10 machines)
-
- AppleShare 34 secs 55 secs 2:05
- NetWare for Mac 31 secs 49 secs ???
-
- Launch medium-
- sized HyperCard
- stack
-
- AppleShare 1:07 1:54 4:39
- NetWare :59 1:39 ???
-
- MacWriteII (5 machines)
-
- AppleShare 2:11
- NetWare 1:28
-
- Simulataneous launch
- Word/MacWriteII/HyperCard
-
- AppleShare 1:23
- NetWare 1:01
-
-
- As you see, NetWare for Macintosh did outperform the venerable SE/30,
- but not by any staggering amount. I'm sure I could get a bigger bang
- by going to ethernet or maybe a server upgrade. Still, we're not
- looking at this for speed, but rather for cost and convenience. If you've
- already got a NetWare file server, NetWare for Mac is pretty cheap.
- But I'm not writing this to make recommendations, so I better
- stop there.
-
- As a University lab setting, we have considerations that don't apply
- to all. People do launch their applications off our file servers, and
- we obviously tested what was interesting to us--word processing and
- HyperCard. I can't begin to estimate the results for other applications
- or server activities.
-
- I will say this much, though, if you're used to setting up AppleShare,
- clear your desk, make a big pot of coffee...
-
- Hope this is of some help.
