- Sounds neat.

-
- Well, kind'a. Novell still only support IPX/SPX as the underlying protocol.
- However, with NetWare 3.11, you can package the IPX/SPX packet in a TCP/IP
- packet. They (Novell) call this IP Tunneling. You still need both IPX/SPX
- and TCP/IP loaded on the workstation in order to communicate. You gain: a
- single protocol over the LAN/WAN. You lose: performance (20-50%), memory
- on the workstation (due to TSR overhead), and money (although if you need
- TCP/IP anyway, you're already losing the money and memory). You also
- lose: dynamic RIP updates enterprise wide, since the IP Tunnel requires
- static 1-hop routes to be defined (all others do get propogated via RIP).
- It means planning the network is a little more involved, and depending
- on the design a server outage can break the IPTunnel network.

-
- From what the press has said, Novell is sticking with IPX/SPX. The benefits
- to using IPTUNNEL is that all your WAN routers need only understand IP (which
- is a more public protocol, and therefore more consistently routed with
- non-Novell routers).
-

-
- Since it's kind'a supported, it's your call. I would say that unless your
- WAN routers don't like IPX/SPX, you should probably use both protocols because
- of the performance hit.
-
- |> Does anybody want to comment on that ?
-
- I do! So I did.
-
- |> Thanks for any info, Ernst.
-
- You're welcome, Ernst. Hope this helps.
