  12. A department at our University is trying to set up a LAN and its
  13. got a problem thats baffling me.  I can attach to the server (using
  14. either old ipx or via ODI) and actually do a dir listing of the 
  15. LOGIN dir.  But generally when I try to login it hangs the system.  The
  16. console shows a connections - not logged in.  Occasionally I've been 
  17. able to log in, but the errors were being flashed as if the default
  18. login script was being misread.  Then the weird part - I ran the login
  19. program off a floppy disk and it worked fine, but then later on we had 
  20. subsequent problems reading the NFO databases in NFOLIO (Netware Help).

  22. This is an isolated lan - the workstations are 486/25 boxes running DOS
  23. 5.0. The server is as follows:

  25. 486/50 ISA bus  AMI Bios.
  26. 16Mb RAM
  27. DOS 5.0 on 10MB DOS partition.
  28. Ultrastore Ultra 14F 16 bit SCSI controller
  29. 2 - 105Mb Quantum Prodrive 105's
  30. Advance Lan Product NE2000 Compatible NIC (I'm starting to hate
  31. *compatible* NICS).

  33. The startup.ncf file loads the u14_31x.dsk (920626) driver which auto
  34. loads aspitran.dsk (911111).  The autoexec.ncf is pretty bare bones with
  35. only one logical board defined - using 802.3 frames with IPX bound to
  36. it.  They are using the NE2000.lan driver rather than the one that comes
  37. with the NIC.

  39. Does anyone have any ideas?  I reckon I'm gonna start swapping out NICS
  40. and SCSI controllers, probably gonna use SMCPLUS NICs and Adaptec 1540
  41. controllers.
