- Again, I hope this is of general interest. I feel a little funny writing about
- LanMan on a Novell forum.
-
- MS TCP/IP that shipped with LanMan 2.1 included extensions which allowed
- a host name table to map NetBIOS names to be mapped to IP addresses. NetBIOS
- normally discovers and resolves names via a media broadcast mechanism.
- Standard TCP/IP NetBIOS (RFC1001/1002) makes no provision for this but it
- seems to be a common extension used by FTP Software, 3Com, and maybe some
- other TCP/IP NetBIOS vendors. This allows connections across a router
- as long as you know the name of the server you want to connect to. You
- can't "browse" servers, though, because server announcement broadcasts
- don't propigate across an IP router.
-
- In the latest release of LanMan (I just got it yesterday) evidently there
- are some new TCP/IP services which are available to run on servers. They
- provide a mechanism for servers to proxy for each other across an IP router.
- This frees the individual workstations from needing a NetBIOS name to IP
- address mapping table. It also looks like it proxies for server announcement
- broadcasts. Based on a 5 minute review of the docs while waiting for my
- upgrade to load it looked like a pretty good scheme. If I understand
- correctly, I think Novell does something similar, eh?
