- I'm trying to hook my NeXT to my Macintosh over a direct serial link and
- not having much luck. The symptoms are that anything I type on the Mac
- shows up fine on the NeXT, but nothing I type on the NeXT ever shows up on
- the Mac.
-
- I have no problem dialing out to other machines from the Mac.
- Interestingly enough, I can dial out to other machines from the NeXT using
- cu or kermit, but if I dial out using tip I get symptoms similar to with
- the direct connection between the NeXT and the Mac. The login prompt from
- the remote machine and everything I type gets echoed to my screen up until
- the first time I hit return. The return gets echoed as a CR without a LF.
- The remote machine doesn't seem to see anything I type. Eventually it
- types something like "Connection timed out" and hangs up the line.
- For dialing out I am using a SupraFax V.32bis modem.
-
- Other background:
-
- - The NeXT is a 25Mhz 68040-based color NeXTstation running NeXTstep 2.1
-
- - The Mac is an ancient Mac SE running Finder 6.0.7.
- (Old enough that it doesn't have the floppy drives that can write DOS format)
-
- - I am connecting a Mac printer cable between the serial ports on the two
- machines. I've tried reversing the cable for the heck of it, but no change.
-
- - I am running the latest kermit from sonata on the NeXT, and White Knight
- on the Mac (White Knight is a terminal emulation program that supports file
- transfers using many different flavors of kermit, xmodem, ymodem, zmodem.
- I've never had problems dialing out with it to other machines.)
-
- - I've tried using just about every device name for the two com ports on
- NeXT, but no change (/dev/ttya, /dev/ttyda, /dev/ttyfa, /dev/ttyfda,
- /dev/cua, /dev/cufa, and their com B equivilants.)
-
-
- I'd appreciate any help anyone could give me. Has anybody gotten this to
- work? Alternately, is there a way to get the NeXT to read standard Mac
- disks (written with the old floppy drives)? I've tried MacinDisk, but it
- doesn't want to read disks formatted on the Mac and the Mac doesn't want to
- read disks formatted by MacinDisk.
-
- Please e-mail me directly and I'll summarize to the group. I miss a lot of
- articles posted to the group because of the volume.
-
- Thanks in advance for your help.
