  28. Another consideration is whether or not SLIP is available at your
  29. site.  Can you get it as easily as you can UUCP? (At UIUC, most
  30. people can not get UUCP access unless they have a really good
  31. reason, while any university-connected person can get a SLIP account
  32. through our terminal servers)
  33. Aside from that, I think that having SLIP is a terrific way to have
  34. your NeXT connected -- no worries about dialing in, and best of all,
  35. mail, news, etc. works how NeXT planned them to work - as though you
  36. were connected via ethernet to the 'real internet'.  Of course, if
  37. your UUCP connection works just fine now, and you don't mind having
  38. to transfer files with zmodem or whatever in Microphone you do now,
  39. then "if it ain't broke, don't fix it'.  You will notice a small
  40. file transfer throughput drop with ftp and SLIP vs. zmodem (unless
  41. you can get CSLIP at your site, which I cannot get here so I cannot
  42. comment on that speed).  It's usually worth it, though, to be able
  43. to have 4 internet connections going on at once with a decent speed.
  44. (Also, you absolutely 'need' a v.32 or higher modem, and
  45. v.32bis/v.42bis is a really nice thing to have for SLIP).
