- Hi. I'm having some problems with using some Mac SE's on an ethernet
- netork.
-
- BKGRND INFO: Twisted pair ethernet Farallon cards in machines from
- Mac II to LC's and Quadra's. These all connect to the network no
- problem.
-
- PROBLEM 1: Mac SE had external SCSI drive and was used as a server.
- It had it's startup disk be the external drive, and it was running
- System 7.0 (7.0.1?) Anyway, it was connected fine to the network.
- Now this machine was real slow as a server, so it was replaced with an
- LCII, and now we're trying to get THAT SAME MAC SE to connect to our
- network. Now obviously it's NOT a problem with the card. The System
- software was reinstalled on this HD (recall it was booting off of the
- external SCSI drive) along with Apple's network installer disk, and
- Farallon has a ethertalk installer disk. All this done, I rebooted,
- used the NETWORK control panel to select ethertalk (not localtalk) and
- tried the CHOOSER. Can't see ANY other machines. Tried LaserWriter,
- can't see either of our two printers. Any clues? The external drive
- it WAS running off of was definitely running System 7.0.
-
-
- PROBLEM 2: We have another MacSE that's connected to the network.
- It's running System 6.0.5. Connects fine to the printers, and can see
- other machines on the network. Problem being, other machines can't
- see it, never could. I presumed this was a symtom of System 6.0.5, so
- I wanted to install system 7.0. (couldn't use 7.0.1 or 7.1 since
- they're on HD disks). Got the system installed, reinstalled the Apple
- Network Software (using their installation disk) and then installed
- the Farallon network stuff. Now this machine which only has a new
- System on it (the machine booted off of the same HD) can now NOT see
- the network. UGH...this is getting frustrating. I tried to downgrade
- to system 6.0.5 again, but still can't reach the network. What's up
- with this? These machines NEED access to the network, and seemingly
- should be able to reach it.
-
- Please Help.
-
- One more little question. Is there a way to get later version of
- System 7.x on Low Density disks? Is there an easy way to get this
- stuff on a new machine short of using the network? Obviously that
- won't work in the above cases.
-
- Thanks for all the info.
