-
- Don't listen to him. A Quadra 950 runs quite well with virtual
- memory on. I assume you have at least the 8 Mb of memory that comes
- pre-installed. I am using virtual memory, set to 32 Mb, on an 8 Mb
- Quadra 950 as I type this. I even have Mathematica running in a 16
- Mb partition, and it works fine.
-
- I can see where it might be a problem if you tried this with only
- 4 Mb of real memory, but that problem does not arise on a Quadra
- 950.
-
- The pauses caused by paging are generally brief and are pretty much
- confined to the times when I switch applications, except when I do
- memory-intensive Mathematica calculations. Using virtual memory is
- still faster than the alternative, which is to constantly quit and
- re-launch applications in order to shoe-horn them into an 8 Mb
- partition. That would also require rebooting more often because of
- memory fragmentation.
