- People:
-
-
- The following is a file about system seven point one that was
- sent to me, hope it helps some one out there!
-
-
- ---------------------------startfile-------------------------------
-
- "7.1 is a minor upgrade." This means that it's not necessary for all customers
- to upgrade, only those who desire the new features.
-
- Purchasers of Macintosh computers after 10/19 who did not get System 7.1 "Happy
- Mac'd" (pre-installed) will NOT be eligible for a free System Update.
-
- Of course, there are a few minor compatibility problems that PREVENTS some
- customers from upgrading.
-
-
- These are the enhancements made to System 7.0:
- 1) All improvements made by System 7 Tune-up 1.1.1 are incorporated, elim-
- inating the need for Tune-Up 1.1.1
- 2) New Font folder within the System Folder for a single place to store all
- fonts and better font management capabilities.
- 3) System Enablers that provide compatibility between new Macintosh CPU
- hardware and system software. Compatibility for a new CPU is achieved
- by adding a software module, not by re-installing the System.
- 4) QuickTime 1.5 (new version) bundled with the System 7.1 product.
- 5) Several new control panels to aid international users in customizing
- formats for dates, times, numbers and text behavior -- sort and case
- conversion for example.
- 6) WorldScript software, which simplifies support of foreign languages in
- System Software and applications.
-
- 1) WHO NEEDS IT? Although 7.1 fixed further bugs beyond Tune-up 1.1.1, the
- only existing people who need to upgrade might be PowerBook 145 users. With
- System 7.0 the PB145 cannot be slowed down from 25MHz to 16MHz in order to
- conserve battery usage. This is fixed w/ 7.1.
-
- 2) WHO NEEDS IT? The new font folder does make organizing fonts easier and
- faster. The only people who need it are those who work extensively with
- different fonts (perhaps they have different sets for different projects) or
- have a lot of fonts. Some applications, such as MacWrite II 1.1v3 or before
- and Adobe Type Manager (ATM) might not work with the new font folder.
-
- 3) WHO NEEDS IT? System 7.1 has built-in support for all CPUs PRIOR to 10/19.
- This includes the PB 145 & Q950. NO System Enablers are needed. For the 10/19
- CPUs and late however, System Enablers ARE needed, as well as System 7.1.
- There is no reason for any user to upgrade in order to use "Enablers."
-
- 4) WHO NEEDS IT? QuickTime 1.5 works with System 6 & System 7 - all versions.
- It's only for our customers' convenience that this is bundled w/ 7.1. There is
- no reason for any user to upgrade to 7.1 in order to use QT1.5.
-
- 5) WHO NEEDS IT? The new control panels deal mostly with international users.
- For example, in France, the 1000's separator is the "." and the decimal point
- is the "," - just the opposite of the US. In Great Britain the customary way
- to write a date is: 31/12/92. Finally, currency labels are different and
- sorting order is slightly different from country (ooOuuUnnN) to country. Most
- of these enhancements are unnecessary for most US customers.
-
- 6) WHO NEEDS IT? WorldScript allows the Macintosh to work with different
- language systems simultaneous, as long as Macintosh applications support this
- feature. Again, this is mostly a benefit to international users, not the
- majority of US users.
-
- MINOR CHANGES:
- The Get Info box now includes a "Preferred Application Size" field for
- applications.
- For better security, GUEST ACCESS is turned OFF by default.
- An AppleShare file server running System 7.1 requires AppleShare 3.0.1;
- workstations are unchanged.
- For TCP/IP, System 7.1 requires the latest version of MacTCP - 1.1.1.
-
- FYI:
- WORLDSCRIPT allows the System to use different language scripts. Not only
- does this mean different language fonts, but the System knows whether text
- should go left-right, right-left or up-down. WorldScript DOES NOT translate
- any text into another language.
- APPLESCRIPT will provide system-wide customization through a HyperCard-like
- programming language. For example, you can create a Finder icon that when
- opened will launch AppleLink, open your OUTBASKET, copy all memos, launch
- MacWrite, paste memos and spell/grammar check. This requires "scriptable"
- versions of MacWrite and AppleLink. The confusing part is that in the US,
- AppleScript will look very English-like. If I give my script ("program") to a
- friend in France, his AppleScript will look very French-like. AppleScript will
- be able to translate SCRIPT PROGRAMS into different languages, but not TEXT
- like "I am now spell-checking your AppleLinks."

-
-
- Enjoy!
