- Good questions. Color (us spelling :-) notebooks are in the works at
- Apple. Right now the color screens are too big and suck too much power for
- Apple's tastes in notebook computers.
-
- You mentioned the current line becoming obsolete when the color line comes
- out. You're absolutely right, but you have to remember that there are only
- two kinds of computers: experimental and obsolete. The minute you can buy
- a computer, you are guaranteed that it is obsolete. That's just how it is.
- You pick a good obsolete computer and use it. There is no point in always
- waiting for the latest technology unless you have a specific need that the
- current technology can't handle (for example, if you really need portable
- color for graphics work, etc.)
-
- Why buy the Duo system now? For starters, so you will have it *now*. Why
- bother buying any current Mac when the Power PC's will be out in '94? So
- you can use a computer for the next year plus!
-
- On the more practical side, the color powerbooks are bound to cost more than
- whatever the b&w/grayscale line costs when the color machines come out, and
- maybe even more than the current Duo prices. It's also important to
- remember that a computer is not an investment; the value will continuously
- decrease from the day you buy it. So even if you wait a long time to get a
- nice computer, it will still become less valuable and less useful over
- time. You will just have waited longer to get it.
-
- None of this is meant as a flame, Wes, just my opinions on the process of
- computer purchasing. I bought an SE/30 just before they were discontinued,
- and I'm sure many PB 180 and Quadra 950 users wouldn't consider it worthy of
- formatting their flppies. But I like it a lot, and I have been able to do a
- ton of work on it in the time I have had it.
-
- Good luck finding the right machine,
-
