- I too used an Apple IIe as my first computer. While I do still have that
- machine, I never use it. I fell no bitterness and happily moved to a
- Macintosh. Let's face it, Apples were old technology. There are some people
- who would like each new advancement to accomodate the older machines. This
- type of thinking has restrained the development of 486 specific software and
- is the same sentiment that holds back some Mac development. There is a point
- at which old technology must be forgotten. One day, maybe soon, it will
- happen to the Mac. I plan on buying a Powerbook in February. I figure that
- that will be current for approximately 6 months. Within a year there will be
- a machine at the same cost that well outperforms mine. Perhaps the Power PC
- will begin to replace the Macs or even the RISC chips. I do not suppose that
- my Mac will become obsolete for another couple of years after that. It will
- take time for developers to fully integrate to the new technology. After a
- year or two of being obsolete I will begin to look for a new computer with new
- technology. If I cannot afford one, I will suffer. That is life. When Apple
- moved to the Mac line they may have moved too abruptly, but I do not see any
- reason they should have held back. The Apples couldn't support the Mac
- software so they had to be abandoned. It was altogether appropriate, and will
- be so when they move beyond the Macintosh.
