- It is a feature of system 7, the file sharing keeps track of things based on
- the machine name and hard disk name, if the hard disk name is changed it
- makes it hard for remote systems to find files. For instance in my own case I
- have alaised a folder, that is on my office mac, to my lab mac, when I whish
- to access the folder I just double click the alias and type the password in
- the dialog box (no need to use the chooser, switch zones, find my other
- machine a select the proper drive etc.). If I change the name of my office
- computer hard drive the filesharing program can't find the folder. So once a
- hard disk has been used for filesharing the system freezes the name. It is
- possible to change the name by using utility disks or booting from system 6,
- but I agree it is a bother. The balloon help tells you the name can't be
- changed but doesn't say why, Apple would save a lot of fustration by
- explaining why.
