-
- The Mac 128K was first.
-
- >a) What is the memory expandable to?
-
- The memory is not expandable unless a MacPlus or equivalent upgrade is
- purchased. If it's a 512KE, the upgrades are resonable avaiable and can be
- expanded to 4 meg memory and a SCSI port, if it's a 512K, I belive you also
- need a ROM chip upgrade which may be harder to find, and the 800K drive up
- grade is also usefull.
-
- >b) Is it the same processor as the Mac plus? (the same speed, too?)
- > Can the motherboard be upgraded? How much will it cost?
-
- It has the same processor as the Plus, (about the same speed, assuming there
- isn't a problem with the limited memory) with the addition of the chips to
- handle the 800K drive and the SCSI port, and expanded memory.
- Apple may still carry the plus upgrade which includes the new motherboard,
- rear case, 800K drive, 1 meg RAM and new ROM, you would still need to add RAM
- to get 4 meg of memory, I got one in 86/87? I resently upgraded a 512KE to a
- Plus with 4 meg of RAM using a third party clip on board, for about $300
-
- >c) Is it system 7 compatible?
-
- The 512 doesn't have enough memory to run System 7, you need to go back to at
- least system 5, and older versions of most of the Apps, Word 1.0 etc., With a
- plus upgrade it should be Sys 7 compatible, but you whould want 4 meg of RAM.
-
- The cost of upgrades from a 512KE is just barely economical, from a 512K it
- probably wouldn't be worth it. A new Classic II 4/40 is only a little over
- $1000, a plus upgrade with 4 meg of RAM, external 40 meg hard drive, is at
- least $650, plus the cost of the 512K, the classic II is twice as fast
- supports color, virtual memory, superdrive floppy, has a warrenty and doesn't
- have the 512K's marginal power supply.
-
- On the other hand if you can live with old versions of the applications, its
- not a bad computer, It's still good for light WP, and graphics, page layout
- with RSG 1.0 etc, and as a remote terminal.

- Just my $0.02
