  19. I doubt its faster, probably slower in fact.

  21. The advantage is that you get better color.  This is especially noticeable
  22. when you have bands of colors that are very similar.  For example,
  23. for gray scale in 16-bit color you only get 2^5 grays (32).  This
  24. is worse than 8-bit gray scale.  
  25.  
  26. If you are doing lots of color manipulation go for the 24-bit color,
  27. otherwise save your money.
