- I doubt its faster, probably slower in fact.

- The advantage is that you get better color. This is especially noticeable
- when you have bands of colors that are very similar. For example,
- for gray scale in 16-bit color you only get 2^5 grays (32). This
- is worse than 8-bit gray scale.

- If you are doing lots of color manipulation go for the 24-bit color,
- otherwise save your money.
