- Thanks to all who responded to my SE/30 distress call. I will
- summarize what the problem and solution is, in my own words.
-
- Problem: HD light active but SE/30 will not boot. Even if you
- boot from floppy, the HD is not recognized. This happened to
- two of my SE/30's within one week.
-
- Several people accurately identified the problem as "stiction".
- The drive was literally stuck, and it was not spinning. I had
- success taking the cover off and tapping (not so lightly) the side
- of the hard drive with a pen. I had the machine plugged in and
- I could hear the disk come unstuck and start to spin. I was
- then able to back up the whole hard drive to tape.
-
- If you don't like putting your hand in there when the Mac is
- plugged in, you might get it to work by hitting the outer shell
- with the palm of your hand, but that seemed to me overly brutal
- and possibly disruptive to other components.
-
- Several people had written to tell me that these drives,
- apparently Sony 40 MB, were subject to a recall or extended
- service period wherein Apple would replace them free.
-
- It sounded too good to be true, but I called my service center
- and read the number off the hard drive. They looked on a list
- and said, You bet, bring it in and we'll replace it. FREE.
-
- The serial number is located at the front of the drive and has a
- bar code. You have to take the drive out to see it, but that is easy
- enough. (1) Remove the small card on the back of the CRT to make room.
- Pull straight back and then push it off to the side. (2) With the
- Mac face down, remove two Phillips head screws at the back of the drive
- and it slides out.
-
- No one gave me the list of eligible serial numbers, nor did my service
- center. They only told me that my number was on it. Perhaps someone could
- post this information?
-
- Good luck, and if this happens to you, don't despair too much. You'll
- probably be able to get the drive going again at least long enough to
- salvage your data.
