- PostScript is a resolution-independent page-description language standard
- established by Adobe, Inc. In plain English: PostScript is a special
- printer control language designed to be compatible across many printers,
- from low-resolution 300 dpi desktop lasers to 1200 dpi photo-typesetters.
-
- Its main application is in the desktop publishing industry, which uses low-
- cost desktop laser printers to "proof," i.e., rough-draft, layouts before
- spending $BIG BUCKS$ on photo-typeset final output.
-
- This magic is possible because a page full of graphics (color or gray-scale)
- and text (with fonts galore), when encoded in the PostScript language,
- becomes a set of mathematical expressions describing how to *DRAW* the page.
- When these commands are sent to a PostScript-capable printer, the printer
- takes the mathematical formulae and redraws the page to whatever resolution
- the printer is capable.
-
- If you need device-independent output, then PostScript is the de facto
- standard, and a Personal LaserWriter NTR is a very inexpensive way of
- getting PostScript output. (Also consider third-party printers; GCC
- technologies offers fine competition to Apple in this market.)
-
- If you mostly print text, and must economize, stick with the LS. If you
- discover that you require PostScript in the future, be warned that Apple
- makes no upgrade to the NTR available. The only ways to get PostScript
- output on the LS are:
-
- 1) For text-only output, Adobe Type Manager (ATM). This is a control
- panel that allows you to use PostScript fonts on-screen & on paper.
-
- or
-
- 2) For graphics & text, either Freedom of Press, or TScript. These
- applications are PostScript interpreters, i.e., they decode the
- PostScript formulae into bitmaps (dot patterns) and send these
- patterns to the LS. Be warned that both are *VERY* slow, and
- *VERY* memory-intensive.
-
- A product worth considering in the LS's price range is the GCC Elite
- laser, which does have a hardware PostScript upgrade.
