- It uses CCL script files (the same files as ARA uses) for controlling
- the modem, thus the user interface is as clear and simple as it is in
- the Apple's Remote Access Setup control panel. The tool can also trace
- CCL scripts. Balloon Help(tm) supported.
-
- Changes: several bugs (processing SBREAK, INCTRIES) are fixed. CCL
- engine modified to support some features of the LineShare(tm) CCL engine
- (like \r and \n for Carriage Return and Line Feed symbols).

- From: RICHARD LIM <RTL@SIVA.BRISTOL.AC.UK>
- Subject: Colo(u)rs - 16-bit versus 24-bit (A)
-
- I'm not an expert on the above subject but here are some comments which I
- hope will be of use.
- Firstly there's nothing new about 16-bit colour of course; any owner of the
- humble LC knows you can achieve that with 512k of VRAM and a 12" (but not
- 13") monitor.
- I can testify that it looks very good indeed on my LC. 24-bit JPEGs and
- QuickTime movies look flawless at 16-bit colour. Some kind of dithering is
- probably used but frankly it's very hard to detect any evidence of it at all.
- As for whether a CLUT is used or whether it's direct color, again, I'm not
- sure what these terms mean but I know that you don't see any evidence of a
- 16-bit palette resource in your System file; somehow the Mac seems to know
- that it's dealing with 16-bit colour and just takes it in its stride. I
- know that I personally cannot detect any change in the screen colours when
- viewing a 24-bit JPEG or movie, so it seems that the Mac is using the
- available colours rather than different palettes (which is often necessary
- at 8-bit depth to view even 8-bit pics, since those often contain colours
- which are not found in the System 8-bit palette).
- I myself have been puzzled over how many bits the Mac assigns for R, G and B
- if you have 16-bit colour; obviously 16 into 3 does not go! At least at
- 24-bit colour one knows that one has one byte for R, G and B. Interestingly,
- note that 2 to the power of 16 is actually 65536, so 32767 colours (which is
- what Apple calls "16-bit color") is actually 15-bit colour! Could this be
- the resolution of the problem?
- The Quadra 700 and 900 do NOT support 16-bit colour at all. The Quadra 950
- will, I believe, do 16-bit colour without any extra VRAM required provided
- your screen is no bigger than 640x480 I think. The greater than sign just
- means that Quadras will do 24-bit colour, ie 16.7 million which is the
- maximum supported by the Mac OS. The newest Macs support 16-bit colour
- with the addition of more VRAM rather than a pricey video card, a laudable
- move on Apple's part as I think 32,000 colours will be more than enough for
- most people's needs

-
- While Fetch only debinhex's and unStuffs 1.5.1 files, it CAN be
- configured to use Apple Events to pass files to StuffIT Expander (Disk
- Doubler too, for .dd archives). I use Fetch and EVERYTHING ends up
- nicely expanded.

- I believe it's been pointed out before that the above logic would have
- us all using MacWrite 1.0 :) I don't know of a service or a BBS worth
- calling that doesn't have StuffIT Expander which supports all the .cpt
- and .sit formats automagically. StuffIT Expander is about to be

-
- Seven percent seems small until you note that once info-mac's new one
- gigabyte drive is installed the difference adds up to 70 MBytes. Find a
- major service that doesn't have StuffIT Lite available for download.
- Apple switched to Deluxe 3.0 format last JUNE while Lite was still a
- beta. You can't fight progress. Anyway, I find System 7 aware StuffIT
- Expander very convenient.

- Hi netters,
- MS-Word 5 is equipped with such a nice facility to directly integrate graphics
- and formulas into a word document. A graphic created with the word drawing
- tool
- or a formula written with the word formula editor (which is a stripped down
- version of math type 2.0) can be placed in the text and re-edited by double
- clicking on the object.
-
- De facto the drawing tool of word is rather simple and I actually am working
- with Mac Draw Pro for my own documents. Is there any possibility to integrate
- the creator information of a graphic into word, so that a double click on a
- graphic within the text opens this graphic directly with Mac Draw Pro 1.5?
-
- If Microsoft based this funktionality on the Apple Inter Apllication
- Communication I suppose this should be possible. But I don't know how. The
- same
- fact occurs with the formulas. In my technical documents I need the full
- version of Math Type to design my formula objects and therefore I always have
- to copy them between word and Math Type for re-editing.
-
- When selecting the "Objects..." item form word's menu a selector box opens,
- offering EXCEL charts, EXCEL graphics, formula editing etc. Is it possible to
- integrate own extensions in this selection?

- I DO read the VaporWare column, in addition to MacWeek. I was digging
- for further details about the upcoming machines, as well as some info on
- the color OneScanner and color printer that were due from Apple on 10-19-92
- (according to MacWeek). If you can help me out on further "digging" for info,

- Subject: MS Word 4.0 double pages
-
- Hi,
-
- As a follow-on to Pat Ullmann's reply on Daniel's question about
- printing two pages on one sheet of paper in MS Word 4.0; I am offering
- my 2 cents.
-
- We were facing a similar problem a couple of months back, and
- concluded that MS Word 4.0 (even 5.0) cannot do it.
-
- But there is a product called "DYNOPAGE",
- >From Portfolio Systems, (800) SAY-DYNO, which can solve the problem.
- It adds another menu after the standard Page Setup menu screen, where
- you can choose if you want 1, 2 or 4 pages on one sheet. You can also
- do trifolds, thumbnails and Index cards. It can be used with a variety
- of Software, not only MS Word. I think it would be a good investment
- if you need to do high volume printing. It retains the format of the
- original application, so that can solve the page numbering problem.

- Subject: New Apple 14" colour monitor - query
-
- We are buying some Macs for our secretaries, and are trying to choose a
- monitor. At present the UK Apple education price list has the old 13"
- high-resolution colour monitor and the new 14" one at exactly the same
- price. As far as I can gather, both monitors have the same image
- dimensions. The advertising claims that the new monitor is brighter,
- uses less power, and emits less radiation.
- I am interested in hearing from anyone with experience of the two
- monitors to help us make our minds up. We have used a fair number of the
- old 13" ones and (except for one with the dreaded high voltage capacitor
- disease) have been happy with them, and now the price is considerably
- lower. Is the new one really better?
- Thanks for your help!

- Subject: Syquest drives: mount problem
-
- A friend of mine complains that he has a problem mounting Syquest disks.
- He uses a large number (dozens) of these and says that about half of his
- disks just do not mount when you stick them in the drive. SCSI probe can
- bring some onto the desktop but with many he has to restart his machine
- with the drive on in order to ensure that they mount.
- He can't detect any pattern to this behaviour but has tried all sorts of
- formatting utilities to no avail.
- Can anyone suggest a concrete set of steps which will allow him to ensure
- that all his disks mount automatically? Reformatting is no problem if
- someone can suggest a good formatter

- Dear fanatical desktop tidier,
-
- I've got my Dad's desktop looking pretty neat, with a row of alias icons I
- made down the side of the screen for the applications he uses most. Of
- course, this isn't good enough for Dad-the-MacManiac: he just says "Great,
- but can you now get rid of those names underneath the icons?" Some people
- are never satisfied.
-
- Well, I looked at the aliases with ResEdit but couldn't see what to
- do. So please, please get in touch if you know a way to do this or if it
- is possible at all, because otherwise, I think I'll go mad! It would be
- great if we could also get rid of the labels under the 'Mac Hard Disk' and
- 'Wastebasket' or is that even more difficult?
-
- We use tuned System 7.0 (of course, what else?) and have a copy of ResEdit
