- Since Apple provides JPEG compression/decompression in QuickTime, not many
- Mac programmers have bothered to implement JPEG on their own. One
- standalone Mac JPEG->GIF program is Jeff Lewis' "Imagery JPEG", which you
- can get from the sumex-aim.stanford.edu archives (I think the file name is
- /info-mac/app/imagery-jpeg-something). Unfortunately this program is based
- on an ancient version of the free IJG JPEG code, meaning it produces pretty
- awful color GIFs. But if you are on a black&white Mac, color output quality
- may not be an issue... I believe there is a grayscale-only output option in
- Imagery JPEG, and results in that mode should be OK.
-
- You could also try Storm Technology's Picture Decompress, a free JPEG
- viewer/converter available from sumex,
- /info-mac/app/picture-decompress-201.hqx. This doesn't need QuickTime, but
- it does require 32-bit QuickDraw and gobs of memory, so it may not run on
- your machine either.
-
- The next release of GIFConverter will include the latest version of the IJG
- code, making it capable of handling JPEGs with or without QuickTime. That
- will definitely be the way to go on old Macs once it's out. I have no idea
- how soon that will be...
