- Hi,
-
- this time I'm really in trouble with something, tried hard to solve the
- problem but no success. Maybe you can help.
-
- My goal is to generate a merged ducument (my thesis) from a number of
- separate ducuments (the chapters). The size of the chapters varies from
- about 30K to more than a MByte (has tiff files in it). Now, if I try to
- work my way through the procedure of copying one document's content and
- "paste link" it into the main file (the one where I want to have all du-
- cuments to merge) it works fine for the small documents (with format,
- styles and everything) but instead of importing the big ones it places
- a link-bracket with nothing in it in the file (this thing is really nasty,
- because you can't select it and unlink). If I close all documents and save
- and then open the main file again it asks me whether I want the links to
- be active. Pressing yes gives me a message that "memory is low, close some
- windows." However, I set Word to 3MB and the finder Memory to 500K, that
- should be plenty. So Word opens the file listing all the shorter files as
- expected but again the nasty brackets for the large files. The strange thing
- is that this feature is made to deal with large files, but it can't handle
- them.
-
- Calling Microsoft the told me that I have a problem with my HEAP and that
- I need a heapfixer (of course they don't know where to get it) to work
- around the problem. They assured me that this is not a problem of Word
- but why does that then happen only with Word. Word must use the heap in
- a way which is not in agreement with the Mac system software, though it
- is a problem of Word? As I said before, I adjusted the memory that the
- finder is using by restarting with system 6 and allocating 500 K to the
- finder.
-
- I would really like to generate a joint ducument in which I can see everthing
- together pagenumbers, EndNote references etc without having to plug in
- everthing in one monster file with 4-5Mbyte. Any ideas?
-
- Thanks a lot.
- Tom
