  14. this time I'm really in trouble with something, tried hard to solve the 
  15. problem but no success. Maybe you can help.

  17. My goal is to generate a merged ducument (my thesis) from a number of 
  18. separate ducuments (the chapters). The size of the chapters varies from
  19. about 30K to more than a MByte (has tiff files in it). Now, if I try to
  20. work my way through the procedure of copying one document's content and 
  21. "paste link" it into the main file (the one where I want to have all du-
  22. cuments to merge) it works fine for the small documents (with format, 
  23. styles and everything) but instead of importing the big ones it places
  24. a link-bracket with nothing in it in the file (this thing is really nasty,
  25. because you can't select it and unlink). If I close all documents and save
  26. and then open the main file again it asks me whether I want the links to 
  27. be active. Pressing yes gives me a message that "memory is low, close some
  28. windows." However, I set Word to 3MB and the finder Memory to 500K, that
  29. should be plenty. So Word opens the file listing all the shorter files as
  30. expected but again the nasty brackets for the large files. The strange thing
  31. is that this feature is made to deal with large files, but it can't handle
  32. them.

  34. Calling Microsoft the told me that I have a problem with my HEAP and that
  35. I need a heapfixer (of course they don't know where to get it) to work
  36. around the problem. They assured me that this is not a problem of Word
  37. but why does that then happen only with Word. Word must use the heap in
  38. a way which is not in agreement with the Mac system software, though it 
  39. is a problem of Word? As I said before, I adjusted the memory that the 
  40. finder is using by restarting with system 6 and allocating 500 K to the 
  41. finder.

  43. I would really like to generate a joint ducument in which I can see everthing
  44. together pagenumbers, EndNote references etc without having to plug in 
  45. everthing in one monster file with 4-5Mbyte. Any ideas?
