- There's been lots of talk (read: complaints) about the absence of automatic
- figure numbering in Word 5.
-
- Actually, after checking out the manual, I realized that using links, you
- can come pretty close to auto-numbered figures.
-
- If you link all of your references to a figure number to the number in the
- caption, then any changes you make to the caption number will automatically
- be reflected throughout your text.
-
- When you make changes, you will still have to renumber the captions yourself,
- but *only* the captions. And if you are working with a very large document,
- then you can adopt the common technique of numbering figures by chapter--
- for example, Chapter 1's figures get named 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, etc. This way,
- when you need to make a numbering change, it will only affect the figures
- within the same chapter.
-
- Sure, it's not auto-numbering; but it does cut down on the work you need to
- do to renumber, tremendously--and makes the process pretty quick and easy.
-
-
- Creating the links is pretty easy, too. You just copy the number from the
- figure caption, and then "Paste Link" the reference. (Actually, I use
- "Paste Special..." so that I can change the format to "Unformatted text"--
- they really should have let you change the default fromat for "Paste Link"
- with a preference.)
