- I finally got a chance today to try the isometric joystick embedded in
- the keyboard of IBM's new laptops. Sad to say, it was not as good as
- I'd hoped it would be...
-
- I had tried one of the prototype joysticks about a year ago. The
- guy who invented it did a demo for our input device research group.
- I was *very* impressed with the prototype. The idea was brilliant!
- Moveover, it was really well implemented in the prototype. They did
- a lot of research to determine what the proper height of the stick should
- be, and what shape the top of the stick should be. Turns out that having
- the top slightly concave produced the best results. Suffice it to say
- that it was just about perfect (as far as I could tell). A year
- passed before I got to try the commercial version...
-
- What a let down! The top of the stick is rubber and mushy. The neat
- force to motion function they'd figured out didn't work as well as on
- the prototype. How could they have screwed it up?
-
- I hope IBM improves this device over time. It has A LOT of potential.
- Too bad the first commercial release didn't measure up to the prototype...
