-
- He didn't change the definition. The last time I checked with ASP, the
- Association of Shareware Professionals (and the largest organization of
- shareware writers), they prohibited crippleware as ASP certified shareware.
- Obviously, nobody is required to follow their rules in order to call their
- product shareware, and I'm not trying to make any "moral point" that one
- has to follow ASP guidelines - this is a matter of choice.
-
- But the association that Shareware != Crippleware has a lot of historical
- validity, and he didn't "change the definition of shareware to suit himself".
- If anything, those selling crippleware as shareware are changing the
- definition (I am NOT disputing their right to market as they wish!). And
- ASP does define disabled commands in the crippleware category.
-
- Unless they have changed; this is a year old.
-
- Anyway, everybody can go back to marketing as they wish, flaming as they
- wish, and redefining shareware as they wish; I just wanted to inject a bit
- of historical accuracy with regard to the terminology.
-
- PS: ASP has found that crippleware also doesn't tend to sell as well as real
- shareware. One could speculate on why, but that's their experience. I still
- support an author's right to decide on their own marketing, even if it may
- hurt their sales more than help. That's their call, not ours.

-
- PPS: some authors define crippleware in between a demo (with serious limits
- which make it usually unusable for real work/play) and full shareware (with
- all functionality enabled). From the description it sounds like ModEdit may
- fit the crippleware category (albeit mild crippling), but is definitely
- better than a demo! Let's not insult it.
