  26. The Tech Support person at the dealer where we bought our 486/50DX machines
  27. with Quantum 240MB HDDs says they have heard of a number of cases of 
  28. interference between lines 31 and 32 in the IDE ribbon cable connection 
  29. causing sub-standard behavior of fast HDDs, in particular Maxtor drives.  
  30. Usually, the effect is just poor performance, but I think he said in some 
  31. cases data was not getting written to the HDD.  He recommended that we 
  32. separate lines 31 and 32 of the connecting cable, and might see a 10-15% 
  33. improvement in HDD access times as a result.  We aren't aware of any problems
  34. with the our Quantum drives, so haven't done as he suggested yet.

  36. Since I'm not a hardware maven, can anyone out there confirm, deny, or explain
  37. this phenomenon?
