- The Tech Support person at the dealer where we bought our 486/50DX machines
- with Quantum 240MB HDDs says they have heard of a number of cases of
- interference between lines 31 and 32 in the IDE ribbon cable connection
- causing sub-standard behavior of fast HDDs, in particular Maxtor drives.
- Usually, the effect is just poor performance, but I think he said in some
- cases data was not getting written to the HDD. He recommended that we
- separate lines 31 and 32 of the connecting cable, and might see a 10-15%
- improvement in HDD access times as a result. We aren't aware of any problems
- with the our Quantum drives, so haven't done as he suggested yet.
-
- Since I'm not a hardware maven, can anyone out there confirm, deny, or explain
- this phenomenon?
