- Huston... We have a problem...
- Well, those guys made it back; I hope we can do as well.
-
- I'm attempting to help a friend bring his computer back to life. It was
- working perfectly until it was moved but despite being very well packed
- didn't work at the end of the journey (maybe unlucky coincidence?). No
- signs of physical damage are evident to the unit or box.
-
- When it is powered up or reset, it beeps 1 long, three short ("B" for
- all you hams). He doesn't have a manual, but all hope is not lost as it
- isn't a no-name; It is an Acer Model 5280, 286 12MHz C&T chipset system
- with an ACER BIOS.
-
- Additional information: The CMOS memory was depowered, but the battery
- voltage has been verified correct & re-connected. The video display
- stays blank. The hard disk spins up & the head mechanism moves from the
- retract position, but the floppy doesn't seek. The keyboard flashes all
- three indicators at power up & reset. I have checked all voltages &
- they are within spec. All connectors & chips are well seated.
-
- Q: What does an ACER "long short short short" beep sequence mean?
- Q: Does anyone know the POST sequence for an ACER bios?
- Q: Is there a key to depress during reset to force vanila CMOS?
-
- Any help or constructive suggestions would be much appreciated (I am
- familier with computer hardware, but not a PC expert).
-
- Please reply by email; I will summarize.
