- Hi Steve!
-
- In regards to Gateway's poor QC (or lack thereof) and UPS's behemoths
- I personally have a few stories to relate.
-
- We've been getting quite a few Gateways on site over the past year and
- one that stands out in my mind was a 486sx/25 that I was responsible
- for setting up in a user's office. As I took the system out of the box,
- I heard a loose screw rattle to the bottom of the chassis. Thinking that
- maybe one had come loose in shipping (all the way from South Dakota to
- Manitoba, maybe 500 miles in truck travel) I ripped open the tower case
- to take a peek. And out fell a handful of screws. And brass motherboard
- plugs. The entire motherboard was loose!
-
- Now we could have blamed Purolator or Fed Ex or UPS or the Custom's people.
- Or our own shipping department. But after I mounted the entire motherboard
- with the screws and plugs so generously provided, I came across the last
- screw and the last hole. THe hole was okay. it was round and there seemed
- to be threads in it to accomodate a screw of likewise proportions. But the
- screw upon closer inspection, actually had no threads. I searched the entire
- case and box and packaging. No other screw could be found. this was the one
- destined for this hole. Yet it couldn't have possibly ever made it's way
- into it. It couldn't have.
-
- I contacted Gateway. They were very apologetic about the entire affair.
- They offered to send a replacement system, but that was unnecessary as the
- original once properly mounted, worked fine. The tech at the other end,
- did suggest that I write a letter to Gateway to formally complain about
- the incident, which I did. In a couple of weeks I received a reply from
- the same tech, on plain white paper (no letterhead?) that the letter had
- been forwarded to the appropriate channnels. Nothing since then.
-
- We still buy at Gateway, since they still continue to offer the best
- bang for the buck. Recently a 386/33 motherboard that we purchased from
- them failed to work with an I/O interface. I just received the new board
- an d am going to be testing it today. The service is great, tho it would
- be nicer if the systems didn't have to be ripped apart upon receiving
- (which I now do to every one I get).
-
- Ciao!
