  19.     When it wants to be standards conformant?  I've changed jobs and 
  20.     don't have easy access to the documents anymore, but I recall that
  21.     some combination of SVID and/or POSIX.2 required that certain applications
  22.     use the values in LINES and COLUMNS if they were set.  If you unset
  23.     them, then the behavior is unspecified.
