- There has been quite a lot of discussion on the net, much of it negative, about
- the Gemulator... the Atari ST emulator for IBM PC's and compatibles. I myself,
- in fact, have been responsible for some of the negative "vibes" which at the
- time I considered quite justifiable.
-
- Well, time marches on and as it does, things change... and so do opinions. :)
-
- I just recently received my Gemulator 2.0 software upgrade and I must now
- admit, it's come a long way since the first release. Most of my original
- complaints about the operation and use of the device are now history or at
- least, very close to being resolved. Running on my 486-33, I find the
- software now roughly equivalent in performance to an 8MHz ST, which is what
- Darek Michoka, developer of Gemulator, promised all along. The few nasty
- incompatabilities which plagued me before are fixed (including GFA BASIC 3.5)
- and my unit now reads/writes to my floppy drives with no problems at all.
-
- While I _still_ do not consider the Gemulator (in its current form) sufficient
- to totally _replace_ my Atari computers, I do now find it a worthwhile
- addition to my hardware suite. And even more importantly, I am satisfied
- that Darek will continue to enhance the software as time goes on.
-
- Just for comparison, some of you "old timers" out there will remember the
- early MagicSak Mac emulator that Dave Small produced through Data Pacific.
- If you recall, that little device worked, but had many problems, some minor
- and some not so minor, especially when hooked up with his Translator (which
- semi-allowed Mac disks to be read by the ST. Now compare those early devices
- to today's truly excellent Spectre GCR. What an improvement! I liken the
- Gemulator to be on the same type path. It works, but will get a lot better.
-
- And so my fellow Atarians (sheesh... what a ham!), I do NOT suggest that you
- immediately trash your Atari and run right out and buy a PC with Gemulator.
- Seldom will an emulator ever be "better" than the real thing. However, I do
- suggest you look at the Gemulator with an open mind. If you already own a
- fast PC, it has the potential to make your system even more productive.
-
- I apologize for the length of this post, but I wanted to clear the air a bit.
- Please don't flame me for trying to be fair, open and honest. If you insist,
- however, please do so via email so we don't waste precious bandwidth.
-
- We now return you to your regularly scheduled newsgroup... :)
