- Hi amiga fans!
- I hope this is an appropriate group to post this, if not,
- please point me to a better one.
-
- I need pointers to any and all amiga FAQs and US-based
- FTP sites of Amiga software.
-
- I'll outline my problem.... I am reasonably fluent in Unix and
- DOS/Windows, and are used to wandering the Internet, but I
- know very little about Amiga systems. But, three or four years
- ago, I recommended that my brother buy one for his teenage son.
- His son was into videos, making movies, etc. and the word I heard was that
- Amigas had real neat video/MIDI/etc. which was (1) more
- expensive on the Mac and (2) non-existant on the PC.
-
- He bought an Amiga 2000 with three floppies (2x3-1/4 + 5-1/2)
- a hard disk and the XT-class brideboard.
- Unfortionately, the teenager only used it as a game machine.
- My brother was quite PO'd that he spent $2000 for a Nintendo.
-
- The kid if off to college now. I've gotten my brother
- interested in getting onto the net. I figure he has a
- computer, I gave him a modem, and all he needs is a copy of
- Kermit, PGP, and a few other tools for his Amiga, and an
- account on a local public access Internet vendor. If he likes
- it, we can move up to POP and Trumpet, Slip, etc.
-
- I figured I could use the bridgeboard to use a copy of MS-dos
- Kermit to get started, and then find amiga-native versions.
-
- But the kid never used the XT-side, and there are few manuals
- to read. I can get a "workplace" icon to show when I boot, and
- clicking on it shows folders, like any of the other "borrowed"
- from Xerox Guis. But that is all I have figured out. I can't
- find the DOS subsystem, or how to read floppies, or how to
- transfer files from a DOS diskette to the amiga's hard disk,
- etc.
-
- I don't even know how to find out the configuration I have.
- I assume that the OS and utilities are at least somewhat out
- of date, but have no idea how to see what I can do next.
-
- Any help to make me less dumb about Amigas will be greatly
- appreciated.
-
- Thanks
- Pat
