-
- You've missed two other points:
-
- 1) IBM regularly develops better hardware and puts it on ice until
- competitive developments force them to release it.
-
- 2) IBM regularly holds prices to max the market will bear for as
- long as they can, then announced overnight price reductions
- in response to product releases or price reductions by their
- competitors.
-
- Holding up IBM as a good example is kind of a joke, at least if you are
- talking about product development. The might server however as a reasonable
- example of sales and marketing prowess.
-
- There's an interesting book out on the development of the IBM 360 series
- that sheds a lot of life on what things were like at IBM during an earlier
- phase when they really weren't sure if they could keep up with the competition
- and also shows the interesting combination of the kind of R&D muscle they
- could bring to bear and the dependence on individuals to make things happen.
