- |Has anyone managed to read a QIC-24 tape on an A3070 tape drive? A
- |friend has a Sun 3 and some PD software I'd like to transfer to my
- |A3000 w/Amiga UNIX v2.1p2a via tape. Unfortunately, all attempts have
- |resulted in the A3070 returning a SCSI error, specifically a BLANK
- |CHECK (i.e., it thinks the tape is totally blank.)
- |
- |Some testing with SCSI-direct calls from AmigaDOS reveals that the
- |A3070 doesn't even think it's QIC-24. SCSI MODE_SENSE return values
- |show that the A3070 thinks the tape is QIC-120. Forcing QIC-24 mode
- |via MODE_SELECT does nothing (not that I thought it would.)
- |
- |We've tried DC300XL, DC600A, even an old Sun distribution tape to no
- |avail. I called Sankyo (the current owner of Calipher who made the
- |A3070 drives) and the friendly technician there is at a loss. The
- |A3070 (Calipher CP150AEH) is supposedly read-compatible with QIC-24.
- |
- |An alternate possibility is that my friends's Sun-3 tape drive is not
- |QIC-24. However, my friend is pretty sure it is. He frequently reads
- |original Sun system distribution tapes with the drive.
- |
- |Any ideas? Thanks.
-
- Call Sankyo and see if you can get a replacement ROM. The ROM in
- A3070s is a custom one. It makes the drive go faster, but gives up
- QIC-24 read. Replacing the ROM will let you read QIC-24, albeit a bit
- slower.
