- I only can speak from experience. I originally got my GVP A500
- controller with a LPS52Q (Quantum) drive. I never had any complains
- about it. Then I ordered a 120MB Maxtor drive and had immediately
- trouble putting it onto my SCSI bus. I finally managed to get it
- running (man was it noisy... nothing compared to the LPS52Q) and found
- that its performance was less than my LPS52Q. I was pretty mad, since
- Creative Computers told me that the Maxtor is equally good than the
- LPS120Q drive. I returned the Maxtor. A few days later our 340MB Maxtor
- drive (on our IBM 486 computer) just died after running it continuously
- for a few months... that was very unexpected, but we got a replacement
- from Gateways quickly and I had a recent backup to rely on. From a
- friend I heard even worse stories so I began my difficult search for
- a Quantum LPS120Q drive. Some time later I finally found one and am
- very happy with the Quantum drive ever since. It gives me a much better
- performance than the LPS52Q (and hence the Maxtor) and is only slightly
- noisier than the LPS52Q drive. I have also currently running a ELS40Q
- drive on my SCSI bus, which is also running very reliable. It is about
- as fast as the LPS52Q drive and still quieter than the Maxtor.
-
- I used SysInfo, DiskSpeed, SCSISpeed, and real life tests for my speed
- tests. Since I have my 030 (no 32Bit RAM, 32Bit ROM though...), my
- LPS120Q is running awfully fast (as fast as our IBM486 with the 340MB
- Maxtor and a 32Bit! SCSI card). I get about 2MB per second raw throughput
- (raw! not when loading fragmented files).
-
- I have to give some credit to the Maxtor drives, though. They are
- incredible cheap. Maxtor has some really competitive prices out there.
- I just wanted performance and reliablity and didn`t care so much about
- the price.
-
- This is all my opinion only... yours may be different! :-)
