- NOTEBOOK PCs STEALING THE SHOW AT LATEST COMDEX
-
- subline:
- Forget desktop machines. Notebooks are the hot items at this year's show.
-
-
- This year, the Comdex rallying cry is "mobile computing." In past seasons,
- the fall Comdex was dominated by desktop computers. This year it will be more
- of a showcase for notebook-size PCs and pen-based computers.
-
- Although desktop systems still account for most PC sales, the growth of
- notebook systems that allow business people to take their offices with them is
- more than twice as fast. Sales of desktop systems are expected to grow at 13%
- this year, but notebook computer sales are expected to grow 28%.
-
- "If you've got a fast desktop computer to sell, people are just going to
- yawn," said Milt Herbert, vice president at the Framingham, Mass.-based
- Interface Group which produced the show.
-
- Between 500 and 700 companies will still show desktop computers at Comdex
- this year, according to the Interface Group. But more than 150 companies are
- pushing notebook computers this year, compared with about 75 last year. And
- dozens of manufacturers are showing pen-based computers, compared with about
- 10 last year.
-
- "The industry's silver bullet last year was price cuts," said Doug Kass,
- president of the Viewpoint Group, a Aptos-based market research company.
- "The silver bullet this year is cool technology in a notebook."

- --------
-
- The obvious questions are: when is Commodore going to develop a notebook
- Amiga??? Will it be when the growth of notebook sales has slowed and some
- other technology is the cutting-edge in the industry? And when will Commodore
- jump into the pen-based computer market? This market is still small and
- Commodore could make quite a splash were they to get into the market today.
- But if Commodore waits and waits and waits before jumping in, they will pass
- up yet more opportunities to become a competitor in an emerging market.
