- You get 4096 colors, but only from a 4096 color palette. VGA has a
- larger palette. It is always hard to compare things like this, but my
- subjective impression is:
-
- HAM < VGA < SVGA < HAM8
- (worst ............... best)
-
- assuming a similar resolution in all cases. VGA is clearly better than
- HAM. SVGA is clearly better than VGA. Its not clear whether HAM8 is
- significantly better than SVGA. Some (all?) SVGA cards let you have
- 256,000 colors in a low resolution and 256 colors in a high resolution,
- both from a 256K palette. HAM8 has a 24 bit palette in theory, but only
- about 18 bit in practice, and you can have > 256K colors in all
- resolutions, not just low, with no visible fringing like HAM has. I
- think it is better than SVGA (for graphical images, anyway), but it
- could reasonably be argued either way.
