-
- I use the word "platform" in two different ways as far as computers are
- concerned.
- In one context, a "platform" is a group of machines that will run most of the
- same software. So you can talk about the Amiga platform, even though there
- are some programs that won't run on the Amiga 4000 or 1000 or....
-
- In another context, a "platform game" is a game where the view of the screen
- is a "cross-section" in some sense--the objects on the screen have height and
- one horizontal dimension. In contrast, in Pac-Man, the objects have two
- horizontal dimensions and no height.
-
- "Platform games" also have gravity, and large flat areas (called platforms)
- which have insufficient support visible on the screen. If I'm being too
- restrictive in my definition, let me know.
-
- There are plenty of games of this type--Donkey Kong probably being the first
- example that comes to mind--and the current examples include Lemmings,
- Turrican, Sonic and its clones, and others.

- "Whether Lemmings is actually a platform game is an arguable point."
