- Hey, For anyone (like me) who has an Amiga with a Bridgeboard and is
- very price concious, I have a Fax alternative.
-
- The Supra Fax/Modem package for the Amiga lists over $400.00. This
- would enable me to _print_ any document I have from an Amiga word
- processor out and over the Fax. This is a bit pricey for my budget.
-
- However, there are _many_ low costs Fax/Modems for MS-DOS, as low as
- $100.00, which annoyed me. Once again, my wonderful (and superior)
- machine was left out in the _installed base_ winter. But where
- there's a will, there's a Fax...
-
- Requirements: Amiga w/Bridgeboard; PC serial port; MS-DOS Fax/Modem
- with software that can convert PCL to Fax format (most do!); Patience
- and time (which is redudant to ask of an Amiga owner).
-
- I simple purchased an MS-DOS Fax/Modem (with MS-DOS Fax software) and
- a serial port card for my bridgeboard's XT card slot (total $135.00). The Fax
- software that comes with the modem has conversion programs to convert
- _from_ a variety of file formats (everything from MacDraw to PCL) _to_
- Fax format.
-
- On the Amiga side, I created and edited my document using my existing
- Amiga word processor (I have both WordPerfect and ProWrite, in my case
- ProWrite produces superior results). When the time came to Fax my
- document, I changed my Amiga's printer preference and selected the
- HP-Laser Jet printer as my printer, and then in the tools drawer, I
- re-directed my parallel port output to a file. Then, back to the word
- processor, I printed my document (now re-directed to a disk file).
-
- Next, on the MS-DOS side of the bridgeboard, I copied the document
- over to an MS-DOS disk (I used the floppy drive that came with the
- bridgeboard). Using the Fax software on the MS-DOS side, I converted
- the PCL format (the output produced for a HP-Laser Jet) to FAX format,
- and presto, I faxed the document out without a hitch.
-
- Hope it helps other cheepskates like me....
