-
- We are looking for recommendations for SLIP connectivity to an IBM RS/6000.
- We have been told that the included SLIP device driver on the RS/6000
- only supports 8 concurrent connections. We are considering placing
- terminal servers across an ethernet connection. By placing the modem
- pool on the terminal server we will be able to have the Slip connection
- be routed across the ethernet to the RS/6000. We know of no limit on
- the number of TCP connections to the RS/6000.
-
- The requirements are:
-
- 1. 9 to 50 SLIP connections to one or more terminal servers.
- 2. Data rates of 19.2 to 56.7Kbps, expecting to use some
- switched 56kbps lines with async to sync converters.
- 3. Transparent access directly from the Mac to the RS/6000.
- We wish to avoid the need to login to the terminal server.
- We wish to have all calls routed to 1 or alternate
- RS/6000's.
- We wish to have IP addresses dynamically assigned to
- the remote user, independent of the phone line to the
- terminal server that they use.
-
- The remote nodes are Apple Macintoshes running MacTCP, by Apple,
- and MacSLIP, by Hydepark Software. Without a terminal server we can
- use the bootp daemon to dynamically assign addresses to the remote
- users(so I'm told). Do any terminal servers do this or have an
- alternative method? The goal is to forego addressing changes on the
- remote nodes based on the phone line used for access.
-
- We are considering the Telebit Netblazer. We would also consider a
- better SLIP device driver. Recommendations?
