  17. I'm having trouble installing an Apple LaserWriter IIg printer using
  18. sun's transcript spooling software.

  20. First problem is that the printer (from the manual) does not seem to
  21. support 38400-baud, unlike every other Apple LW printer I've seen
  22. over the last 5 years.  It used to be that you could send these commands:

  24.     %!PS-Adobe
  25.     serverdict begin 0 exitserver
  26.     statusdict begin 25 38400 0 setsccbatch

  28. With this printer, these commands seem to have no effect.  Worse yet,
  29. the manual has scant mention of how to setup this printer on any other
  30. computer besides Apple (tm).  The baud options available (according to
  31. the manual) step from 19200-baud to 57600-baud (not supportable by
  32. SunOS-4.1.1).

  34. OK, so we suppose that 19200-baud is the best we can do for now,
  35. and proceed to set up the printer.
  36.  
  37. Second problem: Postscript files spooled to the printer produce an
  38. error message "WARNING: Check spooled PostScript for control
  39. characters" (and sometimes "printer out of sync").  This, even though
  40. the postscript seems to print OK.  In looking at the code for
  41. sun-transcript's "pscomm" filter, it seems that this error is
  42. generated when the process sees control codes sent back from the
  43. printer before the job has finished printing.

  45. I'm confused about the compatability of this new model LaserWriter
  46. IIg.  It was purchased as a replacement for an old LWII-NTX, which has
  47. always worked just fine at 38400-baud using our (very ancient)
  48. sun-transcript software.  Of couse, calling Apple tech support was no
  49. help, since to them this is a non-standard configuration.

  51. What gives with the IIg?  How can I make it behave just like the old NTX?
  52. Surely the IIg must be backward-compatible with the old models?
