  14. Ive discovered a major bug in the Hewlett Packard deskjet 500 and 500 C
  15. printers...

  17. I use A4 paper in my 500C printer, which it is supposed to support.
  18. If I set the text compression mode on (dip switch B-1) the first line
  19. of text is partially overwritten with the second line of text, so therefore
  20. I dont use it.

  22. So, with text compression off, an even worse problem occurs...
  23. The printer seems to think that the paper is 70 lines long, and it does
  24. a form-feed every 70 lines whether you want it to or not.
  25. (Actually, A4 is 68 lines long, so the net effect is that every 2nd page
  26. only has 2 lines of text on it, the printer doing an additional automatic
  27. FF when it senses the end of the paper).

  29. I've tried this on my friend's DJ500 (i.e. not colour) 
  30. and the same thing happens.

  32. In order to establish that it wasn't the fault of the printer driver, I
  33. copied a text file straight out the parallel port, thus bypassing any
  34. imbedding of printer codes into the text that the computer may perform. 
  35. I also checked the text file with a hex editor to make sure that there
  36. were no FF's embedded in it). The same thing happened.

  38. Note that Ive checked the dip switches VERY carefully, (I happen to have
  39. perf.skip off but surely the printer should adjust the page length properly
  40. anyway ???).

  42. The Amiga printer driver doesnt seem to generate FF's no matter what I set
  43. the printer prefs to.. (After all, why should it ?). so I cant get around
  44. the bug, if I just want to print normal text. (ie. sending it as text not
  45. graphic codes).

  47. I would appreciate any feedback especially from Hewlett-Packard people,
  48. As usual, the technical support in the UK is SH1T. (HP and Commodore both).
  49. When I rang HP in Bracknell I got a real brush-off, they just kept saying
  50. talk to the supplier. I tried him on the off chance but he's just a guy
  51. who sells boxes by mail-order.
