- Ive discovered a major bug in the Hewlett Packard deskjet 500 and 500 C
- printers...
-
- I use A4 paper in my 500C printer, which it is supposed to support.
- If I set the text compression mode on (dip switch B-1) the first line
- of text is partially overwritten with the second line of text, so therefore
- I dont use it.
-
- So, with text compression off, an even worse problem occurs...
- The printer seems to think that the paper is 70 lines long, and it does
- a form-feed every 70 lines whether you want it to or not.
- (Actually, A4 is 68 lines long, so the net effect is that every 2nd page
- only has 2 lines of text on it, the printer doing an additional automatic
- FF when it senses the end of the paper).
-
- I've tried this on my friend's DJ500 (i.e. not colour)
- and the same thing happens.
-
- In order to establish that it wasn't the fault of the printer driver, I
- copied a text file straight out the parallel port, thus bypassing any
- imbedding of printer codes into the text that the computer may perform.
- I also checked the text file with a hex editor to make sure that there
- were no FF's embedded in it). The same thing happened.
-
- Note that Ive checked the dip switches VERY carefully, (I happen to have
- perf.skip off but surely the printer should adjust the page length properly
- anyway ???).
-
- The Amiga printer driver doesnt seem to generate FF's no matter what I set
- the printer prefs to.. (After all, why should it ?). so I cant get around
- the bug, if I just want to print normal text. (ie. sending it as text not
- graphic codes).
-
- I would appreciate any feedback especially from Hewlett-Packard people,
- As usual, the technical support in the UK is SH1T. (HP and Commodore both).
- When I rang HP in Bracknell I got a real brush-off, they just kept saying
- talk to the supplier. I tried him on the off chance but he's just a guy
- who sells boxes by mail-order.
-
- (No Amiga flames Please !! Its the printer thats got the page length wrong !)
